tectate - stealing their ideas? .. i don't think so. they're all trying to improve on the same concept, which i dont think was developed by intel.
back in the day there were a bunch of people involved in processors.
amd was a nothing. their K6 chips had virtually no traction. even i wouldn't use them. crap.
you might remember cyrix processors (who at one point were controlled by IBM), who had a higher clock speed than intel but had weak floating point performance and kind of sucked. i owned a few of them though, because if you weren't a gamer (which back then didnt give you much benefit) you got decent performance for way cheaper than intel. they eventually got bought out by VIA and i THINK are still around making fanless chips.
was cyrix stealing intel ideas? nah. their processor lines faltered and they backed out of the space.
AMD, on the other hand, came from nowhere and produced a damn good chip that everyone wanted. maybe it was luck, but what's the difference between cyrix failing and amd succeeding? no one is stealing ideas here. intel isn't crowned the 'defacto' processor company just because they exist -- it's because they continue to innovate. but the company and it's leadership is still human and they got embarassed by sitting on their 'lead' and letting a small AMD steal their thunder for a long time.
and there are always going to be people like me that refuse to give into a monopoly when a good alternative exists. that's why i stuck with cyrix and that's why i'm going to stay with AMD as long as they keep making reasonably priced chips compared to intel.
i think AMD shares are always attractive at their lows.
