Gasoline is basically a commodity. Prices are set based on just what economics 101 would suggest.........supply and demand.
Being in the oil business, I may be a bit biased (vbg), but I find it amazing that a gallon of gasoline is less expensive than a gallon of milk. Given the difference in technology between milking a cow / processing milk, versus seismic technology to find drilling locations, drilling a well two to three miles deep, pumping the oil out of the ground, removing the water and other contaminates that come with it, processing it through a refinery, and transporting it safely............gasoline is a pretty good deal. American oil and gas companies lead the world in technology resulting in gasoline being cheaper than milk, coke, orange juice, and even water at your local grocery store even though oil is taxed much heavier.
Had to get that off my chest (g). I am quite proud of what we accomplish in our business although we don't get much respect. But, now I do feel better and can go back to lurking (vbg).
