#28229 RE: Dan3 #28217

Dan, Re: Intel has been failing to ship Dothan and Prescott since late last summer.

They started shipping Prescott early last month. Dothan is late, but that could be intentional. If they have a certain capacity of wafer starts per month, and Prescott is most needed competitively, it could be ramping at the expense of Dothan. AMD still does not have a credible competitor to Banias, let alone Dothan, so Intel could be delaying Dothan to ramp Prescott.

Re: They're just going from 130nm copper to 90nm copper, both on bulk silicon.

The 90nm process uses strained silicon and lowK dielectrics.

Re: Intel regained a lot of ground after they followed AMD to a copper process, but now that AMD has moved on to an SOI process, AMD is taking new ground in the workstation and server spaces, and regaining ground in desktops and notebooks - and revenue...

You bring up a good point that process tech is not easy. Sometimes AMD struggles here, and sometimes Intel does, and it often tends to let the other guy catch up. However, you are confusing the topic by claiming that SOI is letting AMD gain back share. This isn't true.

AMD's next generation processor interconnect and integrated memory controller are responsible for their gains in the server market. The good publicity from that comeback has allowed them to gain some share back that they lost in the desktop and mobile market, but not much. Intel still has nearly 90% of the mobile market, and AMD's desktop share is well below their peak. You might want to check these facts before making those kinds of claims.
