Dan, you are right -
If Itanium becomes a mostly HP product, Intel will let it wither and die.
Except that HP is perfectly capable of carrying on the Itanium product on their own. (They are one parent of the product, after all, and seem to have had the major design input. Intel has had the major manufacturing input.)
I expect to see the architecture handed off to HP in a few years.
