Ok I tried 1024 x 768 and yes the pages all show the same width but everything is so big (fonts etc.) that it looks bad. It is so big that it requires extra scrolling up/down to see the whole page.

After I changed it, my LCD screen (17 inch) popped up a message that says "For best picture quality change resolution to 1280 x 1024" so I changed it back.

I suppose I will just have to live with it.
