I was given an APL book and unlimited computer time and access and told to go to it. Sometimes I wasn't even two pages ahead of the students! But we all survived, and several of my students went very successfully into computers.
That's quite an accomplishment and testiment to your teaching abilities. It's not easy learning it completely from a book.
From what I've heard about that IBM facility, it's quite a place with major computing power. What I would have given in those days to have that kind of access!
