I was an older student, 29, and talked my wife into letting me buy an HP-300. When I went to get one, the 300 had dropped to $295 and the 400 took over the top $395 price slot. Wife wasn't too happy that I got the new one instead of saving a $100 bucks and getting the 300. That $400 is probably $12-1500 in today's money after the hyper-inflation of the 70's. Now for <$100 (equiv to $25-$35 then), you can get a calculator that is probably 100 times as capable and they are required or at least encouraged for high school kids that are taking anything beyond basic arithmetic classes. The new iMac is equivalent in price to that HP-400 and has the same relationship as the Space Shuttle has to a Model-T Ford.
If you want something else to envy, I also had a Bomarc calculator, the first electronic pocket calculator, from England. 4 functions. I don't remember the cost, but I think it was $100 or more, about 1969?? Not sure anymore.
