Zeev, I doubt either Vodaphone or VZ has much interest in acquiring NXTL. NXTL is too small to make it worth Vod's time, as Vod would still be obliged to divest itself of its Verizon wireless stake and thus would become a minor player in the US market.
VZ might be more interested, but NXTL has opted for a go-it-alone position on next-generation technology, so VZ would eventually have to re-fit the entire NXTL network. It makes more sense for VZ to acquire PCS, which has a much more compatible network.
More likely, as you suggested, today's NXTL run is a function of industry consolidation. Also, all the other major wireless players are anticipating a flood of escaping AWE customers.
AWE is a genuine POS network, technologically, financially and service-wise (the main reasons it was obliged to sell itself, imho) and has, by a substantial margin, the most customers wishing to leave. This acquisition will presumably present many with an opportunity.
