Well, it seems a little early to me, too. Then again, my position all along has been that IA32E is a tweak of the microcode, which doesn't take all that much time to implement. You might assume a brand new design, but I don't think that's the case.
Also keep in mind that Intel is not obligated to follow the letter of their own words. If competitive pressure drives them to launch earlier than they want, then that's what will happen. I wouldn't assume that they will hold back on an opportunity to destroy AMD's 64-bit advantage, just because one spokesperson said so.
