Perhaps, but aside from blame, if we had recognized the handwriting on the wall back then, we wouldn't be facing the same problems today. Ultimately, the easy way out is usually the toughest way over the long term.
I'm hoping this time, our utter dependence and vulnerability will prove the impetus to keep us moving towards developing technology to assure our future independence energy-wise. Probably won't happen in my lifetime, but I can dream can't I.
In edit, one more thought. I find it repugnant that a small tribe of rather socially primitive people can hold the Sword of Damocles over the head of the world's Top Nation and, really, we are impotent to do a thing about it in the near future, except go in there and kill people. Yup, that really solves the problem, doesn't it?! Sometimes I really can't help but wonder whether the babies being born today will have any world left to live in at all when this is over and all is said and done.
