The dollar collapse is going to go into overdrive, I fear. I had said two weeks ago when the loonie was approaching par that as soon as it reached par it would quickly sprint to $1.05
Appears I was correct...CAD could be at $1.05 before the end of next week
My next target is $1.08 -$1.12, and it won't take as long as people think. Could be before year's end.
I don't see the CAD slowing down until it approaches $1.25, fwiw
Everyone knows that the US administration foolishly courted and encouraged a weak dollar policy, thinking the US could indulge in a dangerous financial brinkmanship because they foreign investors had few serious alternatives to USD and US treasuries.
This, however, was the result of calcified thinking, imho, which caused them to believe and act as if the world hasn't changed since 1985, and that the US still makes all the rules.
However, the growth of soverign growth funds is something they hadn't counted on. Hank Paulson's surprisingly emphatic statement yesterday that the IMF *must* take quick action to place limits on Sovereign Swealth Funds is the first sign of real emotion I've seen out of old HP. Normally he's just repeating the old tape loop that a 'strong currency is in the interest of the US" *yawn*
However, as Mr. Yen and a few others have noted, SWF's give cash rich emerging economies a viable alternative to US bonds. The buzz in the hedge fund world is that this could be a significant structural shift which will alter the global investment paradigm.
If the US had taken measures to support the value of the USD, and sought other ways to deal with our debt and deficit, the rest of the world might not have been so eager to embrace these new instruments. Instead they implicitly exhibited the old arrogance voice by a Nixon's Treasury Secretary John Connoly who reportedly said in Europe "it's our currency, but your problem"
Well, now it seems that it's our currency and it will be our problem. US citizens will be the one asked to take responsibility for the massive debt their government has run up while they were busy watching "Survivor" and pasting flag decals on their windows
