US Treasury sees tangible progess in Iraq economy

WASHINGTON, Feb 11 (Reuters) - U.S. Undersecretary of Treasury John Taylor on Wednesday said Iraq was making "tangible progress" to establish a market economy after years of sanctions and iron-fisted rule under Saddam Hussein. "Despite a difficult security situation, challenging working conditions and limited capacity, the Iraq's are beginning to overcome the grim legacy of Saddam Hussein's regime," Taylor told a Senate Banking subcommittee in prepared testimony.

OFHEO hires firm to review Fannie Mae's accounting

NEW YORK, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Fannie Mae's financial regulator said on Wednesday it hired Deloitte & Touche LLP to conduct a review of accounting at the mortgage finance giant in the wake of the scandal that shook Freddie Mac (nyse: FRE - news - people) last year. The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's director Armando Falcon said last July such a move for Fannie Mae (nyse: FNM - news - people) was "prudent" although he did not have specific worries about Fannie Mae's accounting.
