I consider myself undertrained. The half was last year...the 3 months leading up to it I averaged less than 35 miles per week and the weeks before I did manage to get above 40/week a few times. The marathon formula that many people throw around is 2x half marathon time plus 10 minutes. This is hard to accomplish, and is a number derived from people who had run a well trained half marathon, and a well trained marathon. That is my hedge and why I think I can run under 3 at Boston. The other reason is that Boston isn't truely one of the harder marathons...the heartbreak comes from expectations, not actualities. NY marathon has a 2x hm = 20 formula.
My favorite run is a rolling 9.5 miles, first half easy, third quarter brisk, last quarter hard.
