Avastin: My apologies for size & cost errors. I was writing off the cuff and should have spent a few minutes checking.
So, mea culpa, especially as criticizing analysts seems to be the topic de jour. :-)
It's still my impression that even Lucentis is highly unlikely to cross the retinal barrier in sufficient quantities to cause serious systemic problems. Given that Avastin is given in much higher doses for cancer, it's systemic effects are known, at least partially, and getting understood better with continued use.
Anything injected into the eye runs the risk of causing infection, thus subjecting the doctor to lawsuits, perhaps more so if they use something off-label and do not keep a vial properly sterile if it is used for multiple patients.
My point was that I did not think Genentech would be liable for a class action lawsuit if it was used off-label for AMD, and they have no financial incentive to promote it for off-label use, as that would cut into their Lucentis revenues.
So, I made a glaring error in the size of Avastin versus Lucentis. Even if Avastin is more expensive gram per gram than Lucentis, the dose needed to treat AMD is cheaper, which is why it is being used.
