Wind coming from fire is an ancient Chinese symbol for the family, and in this picture the smoke from a cooking fire drifts across the scene. A mother and children watch from the house as the father returns. The domestic architecture in most Islamic countries looks inward. The exterior is often merely a high blank wall, but inside are courtyards, walkways, open spaces, gardens, and buildings. The emphasis is on the family within, not on public facade. Although their way of life is continually under attack by the industrial world, some societies still place a high value on strong family structures and firm continuity with religious and cultural traditions and are skeptical of rapid industrialization with its social dislocation and environmental degradation.
