In article by Chuck Taylor in the December 2003 issue of Gun World in which he was testing the LR-308 by DPMS he mentions his favorite .308 load. I thought I would copy & paste it here for you, but I ended up typing it instead… HARR!!!
“… However, since I didn’t sign the Hague Accords governing ammunition, and thus not being bound to them like the military (police agencies are also exempt) I prefer frangible bullets because they deliver far better terminal ballistic performance. I also prefer lighter recoil for faster recovery times (a valuable asset for quick follow-up shots or engagement of multiple targets) and the flattest possible trajectory to make the marksmanship problem as easy as possible.
With this in mind, I conducted a rather extensive research and development program to find the best combination of velocity, accuracy and terminal ballistic performance for the 7.62x51, after some months all data was distilled into a single load, which is more than a dozen different .308 precision rifles demonstrated superb accuracy, the highest-possible velocity and excellent terminal ballistics. It’s sterling performance in the LR-308 proved to be the norm again, with consistent 100-meter three shot groups in the sub-1/2 MOA range being typical.
”The Load: 48.0-grains of Hodgdon H-380, with a Remington #9 ½ primer, Remington virgin cases and the boattail-150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip Bullet. It mirrors MilSpec velocity requirements of a 147-grain M80 military ball (2,750 fps plus/minus 50 fps) at 2, 735 fps, giving the flattest trajectory possible out to 500 meters, which I consider to be the maximum effective range of the cartridge, and producing lower recoil than any 168-grain load. ...”
