That's not what I read or heard on the conference call. AMD (Hector Ruin) admitted they couldn't make or sell many 64 bit CPUs and instead touted the robust demand for Athlon XPs.
All that comes to an end very soon. Prescott is shipping in volume and Dothan will soon as well. The XP will be Duronized and they have no 90nm replacement. All their 90nm products will be more expensive to make.
SZ: you know, that also says that Intel's version of X86-64 should be offered with no price differentiation to Intel's 32 bit parts. That would take care of the issues that Intel is worried about.... AMD getting enough money to keep building new fabs and be able to deliver volume.
SZ re:And AMD is not charging cheap prices for the their 64 bit CPUs. Hence, the 64 bit CPUs are not selling well - not even among the AMD faithful.
I've made this point before. AMD is getting absolutely ZERO premium for thier "64" bit feature. nada. nothing. AMD is trying to change their business model to get premium prices for 64 bits on both AMD64 and Opteron and its not working. Also, most AMD fans on this message board thinks that AMD is no longer vulnerable to Intel pricing, since their pdts. or so "superior". We'll soon see...
The reason volumes of AMD64 are low is because their contributing margin is relatively low (compared to Athlon). No wonder Ruiz has become so quiet lately about unit volumes. Something tells me he'll remain quiet for a while... Joey
