I'm not blaming Cortex for this at all. How could Simmons possibly have predicited the bizarre sloth like behavior of Servier and Organon? Or who knows, maybe the corporate culture of these places was common knowledge?
Speaking of bizarre, the whole ampakine/Cortex story makes no sense at all. Big pharmas in the US (Lilly, Pfizer, etc) are shrinking due to patent expirations on their block busters. And here you have Cortex, with safe, orally available compounds that do all kinds of interesting CNS stuff, potentially useful for huge indications, as well as profitable niche indications.
Yet Cortex's only partnership is with Organon - a company in the process of being dismembered by Schering. Still can't get over the Organon pre IPO presentation where the CEO went on and on about veterinary drugs for pigs.
