Al-Qaeda is getting stronger everywhere, except in George Bush's mind

Editorial

There is something surrealistic, or simply politically askew, about the American president's insistence that progress is being made in the "global war on terror" while all other tangible evidence suggests the reverse. George W. Bush milked the political capital and mass emotional anger that emanated from the tragedy of the 9/11 attacks for nearly five years, but his fantasy world of waging cosmic battle on behalf of divine patrons for the sake of all humankind's future has unraveled briskly in recent months. The important indicators of support for his policy among the public and the party faithful are both falling, as they have throughout the world for some years.

The most damning evidence comes from his own intelligence community, in the form of a report leaked last week that said that Al-Qaeda's operating capabilities are at their strongest level since the September 11, 2001, attacks. Parallel with this, fighters motivated by the criminal ideology of Al-Qaeda and its ilk continue to spread around the world, prompted and primed by the powerful incentive that Bush himself has given them by invading and occupying Iraq. The terrorist groups linked to or inspired by Al-Qaeda have made Iraq and the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier area a hub-and-spoke radicalization operation that draws in militants from around the world and sends them out again into the same world to attack at will. The two most dynamic engines of growth of the terrorism industry are the two places where the US has initiated wars and continues to lead contingents of foreign troops.

The report compiled by the National Counterterrorism Center indicates that Al-Qaeda has rebuilt its global network, despite a worldwide campaign since 2001 to dismantle it. It is not surprising, therefore, that in the past week alone - pick a week, any week you like - we have had Al-Qaeda-like terrorists fighting the Lebanese Army in Lebanon, arrested in Morocco and Egypt, blowing up people in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan, detained and indicted in Australia and the UK, and singled out in the American report as likely to plan attacks in Europe and the United States. That is only what has been made public - and only in a single week. We do not know what is happening behind the scenes.

We do know, however, what is going on in Bush's mind, and it is much closer to fantasy than to reality. His own party pillars have started to break with his make-believe worldview, noting correctly that terrorism seems to be increasing the longer the US continues to lead a military occupation and attempted reconfiguration of Iraq. It's time for the American president to embrace reality and good old American values of humility and pragmatic efficacy, rather than the explosive mix of stubborn ideology and Texan-style machismo that drives his failing policy.

Did you know that Bob Woodward said Fred Thompson was a mole for the White House during the Nixon years?

What do you think about that?

I believe you've been Neo-Conned!

I am not a conspiracy theorist, an anti-war ativist, cult member or a liberal, just a conservative Republican, TY.

Simply look at the facts, not what someone tells you the facts are. Eroding our Constitutional rights in the name of "the war on terror" is a terrible idea. Unless you WANT to become a one world nation with no Constitutional rights?

There is a BIG PICTURE you don't see or don't want to see.
