WASHINGTON — Fallout from an unimpressive finish in second-quarter fundraising continued Tuesday as Republican Sen. John McCain's campaign manager and chief strategist resigned from the senator's 2008 presidential campaign.

The move comes as McCain, whose campaign is suffering from a dearth in donors and dropping poll numbers, tries to inject some new energy into a floundering campaign.

McCain said he accepted the resignations of manager Terry Nelson and strategist John Weaver "with regret and deep gratitude for their dedication, hard work and friendship."

"In the days and weeks ahead this campaign will move forward, and I will continue to address the issues of greatest concern to the American people, laying out my vision for a secure and prosperous America," he said in a written release.

Insisting, "this is not a shakeup," the senator denied that he had asked for the two resignations.
