CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Merrimack Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held biotechnology company focused on the discovery and development of novel treatments for autoimmune disease and cancer, today announced that William Slichenmyer, M.D. has joined Merrimack as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.

Dr. Slichenmyer joins Merrimack from Pfizer Inc, where he held the position of Vice President of Regulatory Affairs for all therapeutic areas from 2005 to 2007. While in that role, Pfizer won approval for some notable products including Sutent (cancer), Exubera (diabetes), Chantix (smoking cessation) and Macugen (macular degeneration). From 2000-2005, Dr. Slichenmyer was Pfizer's Vice President and Worldwide Therapeutic Area Head for Oncology Clinical Development. Prior to Pfizer, Dr. Slichenmyer held senior drug development positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb and Hybridon, Inc. Dr. Slichenmyer holds a B.A. and an M.D. from Case Western Reserve University as well as a M.Sc. from the Schools of Medicine and Public Health at The Johns Hopkins University. He is a board certified Medical Oncologist, having completed his Oncology fellowship training at The Johns Hopkins Oncology Center.

Dr. Slichenmyer joins a diverse and experienced management team comprised of Robert Mulroy, President and CEO, Lisa Evren, SVP and CFO, Fazal Khan, Ph.D., VP of Manufacturing, and Ulrik Nielsen, Ph.D., VP of Research. Ms Evren and Dr. Slichenmyer are the most recent additions to Merrimack's team, both arriving this summer. Dr. Khan joined in April 2006 while Mr. Mulroy and Dr. Nielsen, one of Merrimack's founders, have been involved with the Company since its inception.
