Currently I do not do any panning, although I do live in the perfect state for it. I think when I was a kid my dad used to take me up to the mountains and we would do a little just for fun.
There is a place in Denver called "Ocean Journey", where I have taken my kids and they give them a bag of sand to put in a panning dish. Then the kids dip the dish in the stream and a bunch of glazed, colored rocks appear after all the sand is washed off. The kids get to keep the rocks and they think it is great! Pretty cute to say the least.
