Fortunately for AMD they don't need to jump above the head anymore. The manufacturing process they have now plus exceptional Opteron design, which is already on sale, is perfectly enough to show a very decent profit in 2004.
Take Q1 '04, multiply 600-800K of A64-derived chips by $300 ASP plus another 7 million of Athlons with ASP of $55 and get $625 million compared with break-even Q3 with $500 mil sales. Minus $25 mil more for increased costs and get $100 mil profit of cpu division.
