May 7 (Reuters) - Aastrom Biosciences Inc. (ASTM.O: Quote, Profile , Research) said the U.S. health regulators approved the company's investigational new drug application to initiate a late-stage trial for the treatment of bone death due to lack of blood supply.

The treatment is for osteonecrosis of the femoral head, Aastrom Biosciences said in a statement. (Reporting by Anup Roy in Bangalore)
