Chipguy, as an Intel or AMD investor, the relevant figure is not how much the systems cost, but rather, how much the processors sold for. Intel doesn't benefit differently if HP sells a $2 million dollar system or a $20 system.

Exactly. How well do you think I2 ASP stands up vs Opteron
ASP when the I2 sells in $10k workstations and $25k to $50k
per CPU mid to high end servers compared to Opteron's niche
in $3k to $6k 1U entry level servers?

i think you are missing the point. as much as amd likes to talk about "customer centric" intel is offering a product that allows their customers to sell multimillion dollar systems with features the end customer is asking for.

and if you take the time to get past counting the number of processors in a press release you'll see that the real message of the press release is that adoption in the targeted price range is happening across a wide variety of businesses, not just some hpc niche.

it's about taking the high ground from mainframes and propriety highend unix systems.
