#44369 RE: AlpineBV_Miller #44365

I understand what you are saying about drug costs, and US taking on the share of drug development. I believe this article is comparing total health care costs (surgeries, etc). Would be interesting to see the breakdown of costs.

I strongly believe that the US population, as a whole, doesn't follow a lifestyle that is based on as disciplined a diet and enough exercise (hell, just walking) like it did 20 or 30 years ago. We are too compressed with our schedules for our own good, and now children are becoming more overweight due to their modern habits (less exercise, poor snacks/diet). Of course there are those of us that make health a priority (myself included) and lead a very healthful life. However the trends are leading down a road that will also stress the health care system more imo. More type 2 diabetes, etc. I get really upset seeing what other parents do in terms of nutrition (and establishing habits) for their children (fast food). When kids come over to our house, we can't have the usual food we eat - salmon, black beans, and other healthy foods. My wife pulls out the chicken nuggets for the kids. What's interesting is my son eats better (more food) than they do for dinner. I wonder why? Probably because they each crappy snacks all the time during the day. Sorry....just an area that I feel very strongly about and probably would go into as a profession if I was to start over again in a new career. This stuff isn't rocket science, but once you establish these poor eating/exercise habits it is really hard for your child to rewire their brain.
