OTOH, maybe that strategy is an unproven one that has been kicking around AMD for quite some time. And, maybe, until you exercise it, you really don't know the outcome. With their uncommon success with Opteron coupled with the failure of Intel, maybe it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to try it.

More stupid things have happened, but you have to admit that the outcome is know known, perhaps not acknowledged by AMD. One thing for sure, the coupling of the lawsuit with the strategy is brilliant for getting mind share.

In Q405 they had over 23% of the market with high margins and an asp just under $100 so I really much doubt the extra statistically insignificant 2% of marketshare is what has caused margins to plummet. Slashing prices *is* the answer to selling less competitive products. Nothing outside of Barcelona will increase margins now for AMD.
