No its not a new feature. That particular error message has been around for about 6 months, you just don't normally see it.

When you view a message, we also grab the message id of the previous readable message and the next readable message. You just happened to be unlucky enough to have the next readable message turn unreadable before you got to it.

This should be a fairly rare event. It's probably less rare on some of the cult boards ;)
