I wonder what would happen if the situation were reversed. What if Iranian gunboats had been inspecting merchant vessels off the coast of England? Would we be shocked if the Royal Navy escorted the Iranian ships into UK waters?
Another point - when we capture and imprison other people in a conflict, we say we've detained them. When other parties capture or detain our people, they're captured.
When China held some of our airmen for about a month in China, they were called "detained" by both countries.
I could see Iran calling the situation "capture" for local consumption, especially on Friday.
