Alberta's tar sands oil is nasty and costly to produce. "Tar sands (oil sands) production is one of the most expensive oil sources, with break-even prices often requiring $75–$95+ per barrel for new projects to be viable."

Moreover, opposition to the Keystone pipeline doomed it. Regardless, such a project would be years in the making before providing any relief at the pump. If America is truly "energy independent" as POTUS insists then develop our own fields rather than buying from another country.
