"you’re still looking at 3-5 years minimum and more likely 5-10 to replicate what KBLB has already built"
absolutely not...more like 1 or 2 years...the chinese have been at it for many years already....they are not as far behind as you may believe...the chinese gov is supporting the push into spider silk...they always support these types of research...they will support the growth as well...and china will have the advantage of not needing to make the same mistakes we did...they dont need to break into Vietnam...they dont need to waste years until finally realizing they need serculture experts...etc etc...and they damn sure dont have to worry about funding...
China produces 150 thousand metric tons per year...with the communist partys help in transferring whatever amount of that they want to spider silk, i should think they could scale up PDQ...certainly far far faster that kblb could even dream of doing...
kblb will not be able to compete with China in the clothing industry...they will do very very well in the medical, technical and military and maybe sports equipment areas...and if they are bought out by a Dupont, Dupont will not be able to compete with China in the clothing industry either...
the only way we can compete with or dominate China will be if we can manage to find a way to create spider silk without the necessity of mulberry leaves....otherwise we can leave to china what they will almost certainly dominate and stick with what we can do...and that will be more than enough to grow kblb into a huge company...
