The Bribri are one of the largest and most prominent indigenous peoples in Costa Rica and northern Panama. They are known for preserving their traditional culture, a unique Chibchan language, and a distinct matriarchal, clan-based social structure.
The majority of Bribri live in the remote Talamanca region, in communities scattered throughout mountains and along rivers, many of which are only accessible by boat. Their economy is centered on subsistence farming (cacao, bananas, plantains, beans, corn) and a deep connection to the rainforest environment, where they source food, medicine, and building materials.
