"Electric dreams in tatters as ANOTHER EV truck company once worth $148M officially dies

Another electric truck company is dead.
Bollinger Motors — the Michigan EV startup once hyped for its boxy electric truck designs — has shut down operations, according to internal emails obtained by the Detroit Free Press.
The company's human resources director told employees that November 21 was Bollinger's final day in business.
'We received word late last night that the day has arrived,' HR chief Helen Watson wrote.
'We are to officially close the doors of Bollinger Motors, effective today.'
It's the latest electric pickup truck company to fall under the weight of once-lofty expectations, insurmountable debt, and limited product practicality.
Bollinger burst onto the scene in the late 2010s with its retro-styled, battery-powered B1 SUV and B2 truck, both priced over $120,000.
But neither ever made it to production.
Mullen Automotive took over control of the company in 2022 with a $148 million deal, and shifted the company's focus to delivery-size trucks — but that pivot never gained traction either.
Instead, the startup sank deeper into financial trouble.
The shutdown leaves a trail of unpaid wages and potential state clawbacks, according to the Detroit Free Press, as dozens of employees have filed complaints over missed paychecks.
And Michigan is preparing to fight over $3 million in incentives granted to Bollinger after the company promised to invest $44 million and create 237 jobs.
With the business now closed, that recovery looks unlikely.
In her email, Watson said Michery would 'make us whole with regards to the remaining monies.'
She added: 'It is the end of an era, but one you should all be very proud of.'
Bollinger's collapse will add another tombstone in a cemetery filled with once-optimistic EV makers looking to build America's next generation of high-priced trucks.
For more than 40 years, Ford's F-150 has dominated the US sales market as the nation's top-selling vehicle. Chevy's competitor, the Silverado, consistently comes in a close second place.
When Tesla proved in the late 2010s that there was consumer appetite for electric vehicles, dozens of automakers figured they'd combine battery-electric motors with the ever-popular pickup body style.
But analysts tell the Daily Mail that the plan was mistaken.
Families use pickups to tow, an operation that kills range. Construction workers and contractors drive their trucks on soft dirt, where heavy batteries can leave behind large divots. And owners in the north love their all-weather use, but cold temperatures sap the battery's juice.
Several car companies that made bets on EV pickups — including Lordstown Motors, Fisker Inc, and Nikola Trucks — have all collapsed before their consumer pickups hit US roads.
Meanwhile, Tesla's Cybertruck hasn't met lofty sales expectations, Chevy has had to slow Silverado EV production, and Ford is considering axing the F-150 Lightning.
Instead, car companies are taking a new bet on EVs in 2026: smaller, lower-priced cars.
Nissan has rebooted the Leaf as a small SUV for $30,000; Toyota is building a similar $35,000 competitor; Rivian's entry-level R2 will be $45,000; Slate will produce a $25,000 pickup; and Ford is focusing on a $30,000 small electric truck.
