We don't have journalists any more who had to go through years of college and training.

Accurate or hyperbole?

You HAD to know this was coming right? NO one disputes that there are some real nitwits, blind ideologues, in front of the teleprompter, on the opinion desk and in the WH press corps.

BUT, 'don't have'?

The idea that journalists no longer require college and training is an exaggeration. Most full-time journalists today still have at least a bachelor's degree, usually in journalism, communications, or a closely related field. Over 96% of full-time journalists hold a bachelor’s degree, and nearly half of them majored in journalism or communications specifically, a percentage that continues to rise over time.[1][2]

## Journalism Education Today

- A bachelor’s degree remains the baseline for most journalism jobs, with coursework covering writing, media ethics, law, and multimedia storytelling.[3][4][5]
- Many journalism majors pursue internships or work for college newspapers to gain essential field experience before entering the profession.[6]
- Some journalists also complete advanced degrees for career specialization and advancement opportunities.[3]

## Changes in Training and The Field

- While there are more routes into journalism today (such as digital-first training or cross-disciplinary majors), employers still overwhelmingly expect formal education and foundational training.[7][8]

- Modern journalism programs have expanded to include digital skills, multimedia, and social media techniques to keep up with industry changes.[9][7]

## The Role of Non-Traditional Entrants

- There is an increasing presence of non-traditional content creators (“citizen journalists” or independent bloggers) in the media ecosystem, but this does not reflect a wholesale loss of formal education requirements among professional journalists.[10]
- Legacy media and serious news organizations still largely hire candidates with relevant college credentials and journalism training.[2][1]

In summary, college training remains common and expected for professional journalists, and reports of its demise are overstated. Journalistic standards and educational requirements have adapted to technological change, but professional pathways still demand both education and real-world experience.
