UNITED STATES, Philadelphia mint, gold Classic Liberty Head half eagle ($5), 1836, HM-3 (R.4), very rare provenance, PCGS MS64 (SB Pulaski Shipwreck Label). KM-57. This is the finest piece that we've offered from this incredibly rare early American shipwreck. A superb example, it bears surfaces draped in satiny luster with the boldly struck Liberty and eagle standing out prominently. Both the stars on the obverse and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the reverse are bold and well-struck along with the full rims on both sides. Identified as die variety HM-3 (Rarity-4), which features a noticeable bisecting die-crack running along star 8 and down through the 6 in the date. Recovered from: S.B. Pulaski, sunk in 1838 off North Carolina.
