Having a handgun at home is mainly to protect against armed burglars, crazed drug fiends, etc. What convinced me to own a handgun (early 1980s) was watching the movie 'Helter Skelter' on TV. The people murdered were unarmed, and thus easy prey.

We all have home insurance, car insurance, etc, and having a firearm at home is just another type of insurance. Of course firearm safety has to be the top priority, especially if there are kids around

I'm in Texas where everyone else is armed. I either have friends who will help protect me, or else shoot me. I envision I can stay in the house til after most of the gunfights are over, then pick up a gun at the loser's house
