Having a handgun at home is mainly to protect against armed burglars, crazed drug fiends, etc. What convinced me to own a handgun (early 1980s) was watching the movie 'Helter Skelter' on TV. The people murdered were unarmed, and thus easy prey.
We all have home insurance, car insurance, etc, and having a firearm at home is just another type of insurance. Of course firearm safety has to be the top priority, especially if there are kids around
