By 2030, global data center electricity use is projected to more than double—to around 945?TWh annually, with AI as the driving engine. In the U.S., data centers already consume approximately 4.4% of national electricity (likely rising to over 9–12% by 2030) . Meanwhile, transmission planner delays stretch up to six or seven years in markets like Northern Virginia—where data centers face extreme “speed-to-power” lead times .

This aging infrastructure—70% of transmission lines and transformers over 25 years old in the U.S.–is simply not built for AI’s scale . Without local generation, data centers face supply bottlenecks, costly tariffs, and service delays.

In this context, SMRs offer not just resilience—but a chance to rethink the geography of power.
