TJ since you get answers ask about Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is actively in need of—and pursuing—digital transformation, especially across public services, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and disaster resilience.
🔍 Why Puerto Rico Needs Digital Transformation
1. Aging Infrastructure
• Much of the island’s electrical grid, water systems, and public buildings remain outdated.
• The power grid, in particular, has been a persistent problem since Hurricane Maria (2017), exposing the need for smart-grid solutions and digital monitoring systems.
2. Government Services
• Public services such as tax filings, permit processing, and public health systems are still heavily manual or siloed.
• There is strong demand for e-government portals, automation, and better interagency data integration.
3. Disaster Resilience
• Puerto Rico is vulnerable to hurricanes and earthquakes.
• It needs IoT-based early warning systems, AI-driven resource planning, and digital infrastructure mapping to improve preparedness and recovery.
4. Economic Development
• With a shrinking population and rising costs, digital services could improve efficiency, attract investment, and reduce government spending.
• Smart city initiatives can create more livable environments in urban hubs like San Juan, Bayamón, and Ponce.
🛠️ Current Efforts and Gaps
In Progress:
• PRITS (Puerto Rico Innovation and Technology Service) is the government agency in charge of digital transformation.
• Efforts are underway to digitize property records, implement cybersecurity protections, and expand fiber/broadband access.
• Smart Cities Puerto Rico and Engine-4 in Bayamón are incubating smart-tech initiatives and urban innovation.
Still Needed:
• Nationwide broadband access (especially in mountainous and rural regions)
• Smart transportation, traffic management, and energy systems
• Integrated public data platforms for transparency and responsiveness
• Partnerships with global tech firms to scale pilot programs
