No, because not learning how to read and write was not an option. And we didn't have generative AI to do our work for us. I didn't go to a Catholic school, either. Just what was available locally. Not the greatest, but they did have some standards.

However... Go read some stuff from relatively uneducated 19th century Americans. Maybe Civil War correspondence. Though spelling wasn't yet standardized, for the most part they did MUCH better than their modern equivalents would do.

It can't be more than 'some students', otherwise how did they get the grades or the test scores to get into those elite colleges.

Really? Many have changed applications and requirements for acceptance. I don't mean DEI. Many schools, including Ivies, no longer require even the SATs.

And I've seen quite a few articles, many of them in prestigious publications, expressing concern over what is a relatively new problem, at least in its severity.
