Robotaxis are a terrific idea
We will see how implementation goes, but they offer the possibility of fewer accidents, and much more efficient use of resources. Most cars are idle 95% of the time. We waste a lot of money to have these things sitting in the driveway.
Its a great idea like internet search was a great idea. Early detractors would have said search is a bad idea because searching for a 1987 Ford Explorer manual would turn up pages of porn. Searches for Sunday church services would return pages of porn.
Early implementation of search sucked, but we figured it out. The distinction is that something that is a good idea is not the same thing as a great product right now. AI LLM's are in that same bucket, but still incredibly useful as is.

I like the idea because it eliminates being under the influence, texting while driving, eating while driving, road rage, and all sorts of other things that diverts a driver's attention.

Robotaxis are a great idea, but whether they are economically and legally viable at this point in time using just visual sensors remains to seen (no pun intended). Waymo self driving taxis are very successful in CA, but are extremely expensive to build and a money loser for Google. I'd love to ride in a Waymo !
