It's describing the global scene, whereas I narrowed it down to America. It's a good point, though, which I failed to mention, about the pernicious effects of social media.

I also overlooked income inequality, which is probably as bad as it's been, here, in 100 years. If I remember correctly, JK Galbraith, in his book on the Great Depression thought that it was likely the cause.
