The candy later known as Necco Wafers traces its roots to 1847, when Boston inventor Oliver Chase created a lozenge cutting machine and, together with his brother Silas, began producing sugar-wafer candy. Among its early customers, Chase & Co.’s wafers were carried by Civil War soldiers.
In 1901, Chase & Co. merged with two other Boston candy producers to form the New England Confectionary Company (NECCO). Necco Wafers were (and still are) produced in eight flavors: lemon, lime, orange, clove, cinnamon, wintergreen, licorice, and chocolate.
