Thanks for that. I have not been on a roll on a wildfire for 15 years; most things remain the same. But the fuels get drier than they used to, even in this Mediterranean climate, and the weather seems a little more turbulent, but that is only observational. We were pretty good at controlling fires, and did a lot of prescribed burning, but part of the intense fire now is a result of some of our stopping fires. Fires that were moderate or low intensity did as much ecological good as harm, but they were easier to put out, now the big ones burn until fall are essentially uncontrollable.

We were fully aware of the consequences of putting out moderate and light fire, but where there are homes in the forest, putting them out was always the objective. Now they often get burned despite control efforts.
