This is the most likely explanation, imo. The clean extraction methods were insufficient to separate metals from this ore. It's a leap to assume that Irish left for ethical reasons, and certainly fits the bear narrative on this platform. Regarding metallurgy, I don't think it can be overstated how significant Sean's post was. I'm anticipating an upward adjustment of AISC, but even if costs went up enough to match the increase in the price of gold (which would mean they would have to nearly triple), it's still as profitable as it was when the original calculations came out with gold at $1865. Near term, nothing else matters.

So, SDRC brought in an octogenarian with zero reputation in the mining industry, no experience with PGMs, and played him up as the answer to all those horrible metallurgical problems? Why?
