I suppose what is needed is for someone to invent an all in one unit.
It might be an ugly beast but perhaps possible.

Need electricity to separate the oxygen and hydrogen, solar panels on the roof and a backup battery in the trunk.

Then the separation system to inject hydrogen into the engine and spit oxygen into the atmosphere.

From reading what little I've read so far, it isn't clear how pure the water needs to be.

So the system would need to be able both seawater and fresh water.

Then you just stop off anywhere and fill up with whatever water is available.

It should be possible with about 1000 of the brightest minds on the planet and a budget of several trillion bucks.

As you probably know, California has been shutting down hydrogen refueling stations
