CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT SS was an American cargo steamer of 7191 tons built in 1942. On the 4th July 1942 when on route from Baltimore & Reykjavik for Archangel in Convoy PQ-17 as a straggler and carrying a cargo of 2,750 tons of military stores she was torpedoed by German submarine U-457 and sunk about 35 miles Ne of Bear Island in the Barents Sea. 3 crew lost from a total of 60.
PQ-17 was the code name for a WWII Arctic Convoy, which in July 1942, suffered a significant defeat when it lost 24 of the 35 merchant ships during a series of heavy German attacks by bombers and submarines.
On 27 June, the ships departed eastbound from Hvalfjord, Iceland for the port of Arkhangelsk, Soviet Union, but was located on 1 July by German forces. The escorting warships were ordered to intercept German raiders and the convoy was ordered to scatter without the protection of the escorting destroyers.
Only 11 ships reached their destination, delivering 70.000 tons of cargo and 24 ships, totalling 142.780 gross tons were lost.
