There are huge commissions, monthly fees, and limitations on how much you can buy, in the end it's not really worth it unless you know what you are doing. Plus they can cut you off at any time if you turn into a liability. So it's not for the average Joe.
I guess if you hit 3 good ones a year, it's a benefit to the brokerage and yourself. That's why I keep one active.
