Yes, he did deserve it, because he committed crimes. Of which he was convicted on 34 counts.

The "banana republic" argument was used back when Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon. "But we couldn't sent him to prison, because we'd look like a banana republic!"

Turned out many people didn't feel that way, and it's probably why Ford lost to Carter in the next presidential election. And Nixon, though like Trump in some ways, was much smarter, and had, at least, no traitorous aspirations.
