As far as I know, you don't salute even on memorial day to anyone if you're not in the military, never served or not with any law enforcement agencies.
But vets and others don't mind if a civilian salutes them as it's still out of respect and thanks from regular people. So it's something not sweated.
Matter of fact, I don't know why anyone would be putting their hand over their heart during amazing grace either...
