Update: ( bottom, after restart to get the Copy alive again) Roll Tide!?? WTH?? You know how curiosity costs so much time!

What does Roll Tide mean?

Roll Tide is a phrase trademarked by the University of Alabama. It is a cheer
used to rally fans of the college’s athletics teams, known as the Crimson Tide.

Where does Roll Tide come from?

SkinIt

The origin of Roll Tide as a rallying cry can be traced to the Alabama—or ‘Bama as it’s often abbreviated—football team. ‘Bama fans yell Roll Tide to encourage the team … not that they need encouraging because they’re pretty good at winning. The phrase is sometimes elongated by folks in Birmingham to “roll tide, roll.”

But Roll Tide is not limited to the gridiron, nor is it only meant as a rallying cry. Fans sometimes say “roll tide” or use the social media hashtag “#RollTide” to refer to carrying on, as a greeting to other fans, or as a means of showing excitement over something, be it related to ‘Bama athletics or to their own life.

The uninitiated struggle to understand why Alabama's most recognizable universities have mascots AND "battle cries" - and why the battle cries have no connection whatsoever to the mascots. To help parents of young fans, as well as newcomers to Alabama, we created this handy guide to battle-cry etiquette. (Huntsville photo by Bob Gathany/bgathany@al.com)

The uninitiated struggle to understand why Auburn's and Alabama's battle cries have no connection whatsoever to their team mascots. Bless their little uninformed hearts.

If you get a War Eagle or Roll Tide on the street or in the grocery store, proper responses include:

* A return "War Eagle" or "Roll Tide"
* An enthusiastic "War
* You could even say, "Go Bama," or "Go Big Blue," but you should never ever respond with silence - that's just rude - or worse, with "thank you." The only ones who could realistically respond with "thank you" are the Creators: God, Bear Bryant and Shug Jordan. Just sayin.'

Ok, now you are pretty well safely set for an Alabama trip.

Also, for those with an hour to kill sometime, a history of mascots with a focus on Big Al

Curiosity can cost time, and space, as it turns out.

Carry on.

Update: Auburn Tigers vs. War Eagle: does Auburn have two mascots?

Auburn does not have two mascots. Auburn’s athletics teams are the Tigers and the tiger mascot’s name is Aubie. War Eagle is Auburn’s battle cry and the symbol is a live golden eagle named Aurea, or War Eagle VIII, who lives at the Auburn University Raptor Center in the university’s College of Veterinary Medicine. At the beginning of each football game, an eagle circles Jordan-Hare Stadium to the cries of “Warrrrrrrrr Eagle, Hey!” from fans. In addition to Aurea, a bald eagle named Independence, or Indy for short, also flies at games. While Auburn flies a bald eagle at times, the official War Eagle symbol is a golden eagle and only golden eagles are approved as part of officially licensed product designs.
